Forever Ago Guide: Full Walkthrough & All Chapters

Complete Forever Ago guide covering every chapter, from Woolson Falls to the Epilogue. Step-by-step walkthrough, photo tips, and puzzle solutions.

Forever Ago is a narrative-driven road trip adventure from developer Third Shift and publisher Annapurna Interactive, and if you're stuck on a photo prompt or a locked gate, this Forever Ago guide has you covered. The game follows Alfred, a man in his mid-seventies who travels north by minivan after a personal tragedy, documenting his journey with an instant camera. Because the game is light on puzzles but heavy on missable photo moments and small item interactions, a chapter-by-chapter Forever Ago guide saves you from wandering.

Below you'll find a full walkthrough broken into the game's nine chapters, plus tips on camera mechanics, journal photos, and the few moments where the game actually asks you to think. Expect roughly four hours of playtime on a first run, and remember that this is an emotional story — several themes hit close to home, so pace yourself.

The game was first announced back in July 2020 and resurfaced during the Annapurna Interactive Showcase in 2022 before a full re-reveal at the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview. According to the official Forever Ago website, Third Shift built the setting around the American Pacific coast, inspired partly by co-founder Kai Brueckers' own coastal road trip.

How the Camera and Journal Work

The instant camera is your primary interaction tool. You'll use it to progress the story, bank memories, and unlock optional achievements.

  • Shake every photo. After snapping a shot, shake it to develop the image before it registers.
  • Place photos in your journal. At campsites and booths, you can slot developed pictures into your album. Community reports suggest doing this regularly, since it keeps your journal organized for later story beats.
  • Watch for pose prompts. Alfred and other characters will strike poses — these are mandatory progression photos, not optional flavor.
  • Screenshot-worthy scenery is everywhere. Coastal paths, retro diners, and snowy mountains all reward a quick photo, and some unlock achievements.

Movement is slow by design, and the game rarely switches up its loop of walking, examining, and photographing. That's worth knowing before you start — this is one of the more overt "walking simulator" titles in the genre, so the camera is genuinely your main verb.

Chapter 1: Woolson Falls

This opening chapter is a tutorial in disguise, set inside a bedroom before jumping to a car ride and a trail walk.

StepAction
1Learn the controls, then photograph the manual itself
2Turn around and capture the teddy on the bed
3Photograph the wall images next to the study table
4Snap the calendar on the desk
5Point your camera out the window at Alfred's pose
6During the car ride, take a random photo and talk to Alfred
7Photograph the Woolson Falls sign when prompted
8After the ride, crouch to photograph the flowers
9Capture Alfred's second pose on your left
10Photograph another signboard, then keep talking to Alfred
11When Audrey says thank you, photograph Alfred again

Audrey then hands the camera to Alfred, switching you into third-person control. Follow her along the trail and keep the conversation going. At the end, Alfred takes a final photo with Audrey before the time skip. Shake the photo, open your journal, and place it inside to close the chapter.

Chapter 2: Karl's Pump 'N' Mart

The road trip properly begins at a gas station, where you need three specific items.

Shopping List

  • Cookies — on the far side of the store after you turn around
  • Windshield wipers — at the very end of the right-hand aisle
  • Road atlas — near the toilet paper section, where an old photo also hangs

Grab a red basket on your left, collect everything, then pay Milton at the counter near the entrance. A cutscene triggers that pulls you into a memory, followed by a nightmare sequence. Keep heading straight through the door and up the stairs, then pay Milton with your wallet once you're back.

You'll camp next. Interact with your photos to place them in the album, and take any extra shots you want. Drive on the next day to reach the diner.

Chapter 3: Highway Star Diner

This chapter has three objectives, and the order matters for efficiency.

ObjectiveLocationNotes
Find Audrey's favorite flowerThrough the fence near your van, by the telescopePick the flowers
Play Audrey's favorite songJukebox, left side of the dinerSelect "Green Green Grass of Home" by Patti Page
Use the boothStraight ahead from the jukeboxRequires membership — talk to Maddy

The booth is locked behind a membership requirement. Talk to waitress Maddy at the counter, and she'll give you a small task. Head right after exiting the diner and go through the fence, investigate the hole and trash area, and you'll find a dog — photograph it. Report back to Maddy to unlock the booth.

Sit down, add any photos to your album, and snap the scenery outside the window when prompted. You'll then enter a memory of the location: interact with the gate sign, meet Audrey, peek inside the diner for a cutscene, open the tiny case in your hand, then follow Audrey and sit with her. The scene ends with Alfred confessing his feelings.

Chapter 4: On the Road Back Home

Back in the present, your van breaks down. Check three spots in order:

  1. Behind the van — inspect the leakage
  2. In front of the van — check the hood
  3. Right side of the van — check inside

Enter the van and grab your journal from near the dog, then head straight to the phone booth. After the cutscene, you'll wake inside a dream. Walk straight, interact with the phone at the end, and keep going to exit.

Chapter 5: The Sam Detour

You wake in a house. Read the note on the door, pick a shirt, and interact with objects around the house before heading outside to find your van and Sam.

You'll fail to fix the van alone, so Sam steps in. Follow her and water the plants along the way — refill at the faucet when your water runs out. After watering, follow her again to collect the gaskets. A cutscene fixes the van; tighten the last bolts yourself to finish.

Then follow Sam and the dog across the fields for a short detour. Throw the stick to play with the dog, and sit with Sam at the end to take a selfie for your journal.

Chapter 6: Captain Marley & The Buccaneers' Retreat

This abandoned resort is the most involved chapter in the game, with a bolt cutter, an arcade, and a boat sequence.

Resort Walkthrough

StepWhat to Do
1Check the entrance booth, then follow the path to reception
2Grab a day ticket from the ticket booth and enter
3Stay right, pass under the narrow area
4Go straight, take a left into the captain's galley
5Head upstairs into the nightmare — walk straight through
6Use planks to bridge the floor gap
7Pick up the bolt cutter on the other side
8Break the balcony lock, descend the ladder
9Cut the lock on the skull and coins arcade, pull the lever for lights
10Play Guardian Lord at the back machine (any score completes the objective)
11Exit, stay right, break another lock to enter the souvenir shop
12Grab mascot tickets from the shelf next to the parrot
13Exit near the parrot, head to the docks, cut the harbor lock
14Take the boat to the island, photograph mid-ride for a flashback
15Steer with Audrey (let her steer first, then follow), carve the tree

The Guardian Lord high-score objective completes even if you don't beat the record, so don't stress about the minigame.

Chapter 7: Winslow Lighthouse

Before the lighthouse, you'll stop at an animal shelter for the dog. After the cutscene, you're back on the road.

Once you wake, make coffee and feed the dog. Follow Charles through the cutscene, then photograph him when he sits — your camera switches automatically, so keep snapping until the session ends. Continue along the linear path toward the lighthouse, throwing sticks for your dog along the way. Read the sign at the entrance, then point your camera at the top of the lighthouse to trigger a memory. Head inside, climb the stairs, and watch the cutscenes.

Chapter 8: Williamina Peak

This is the game's most linear stretch. While driving, increase your wiper speed against the weather — you'll crash regardless, dropping into another dream. Walk straight to escape it.

When you wake, follow your dog's tracks in the snow and keep calling out. Even when the tracks disappear, keep heading straight. After you're reunited, climb the stairs to the peak. Another dream section follows — just walk forward and go through the door at the end.

Back in the memory, place the tray next to Audrey and feed her the soup. Talk with her, then after the flashback, open the drawer and read Audrey's final note in your journal.

Chapter 9: Epilogue

The finale is quiet and interaction-driven. Stay in the house and interact with everything you can. When you reach the kitchen, start making dinner. You'll then meet up with your dog, and the epilogue — and Alfred's journey — ends when you go play with your pet.

Tips for a Smooth Playthrough

  • Turn on subtitles. Proximity dialogue volume can be inconsistent, and community reports note that lines occasionally get buried under ambient sound.
  • Photograph everything early. Optional photos unlock achievements and fill your journal, and no major story beats are missable if you skip them.
  • Expect slow movement. The back third of the game leans heavily on forward movement with minimal interactivity, so settle in.
  • Watch for the two vocal tracks. The soundtrack uses them sparingly, but they land hardest at the biggest narrative moments.
  • Check your emotional bandwidth. This is a heavy story about grief and loss. If you've recently dealt with either, the game can hit hard.

If you're a patient fan of narrative adventures like Life is Strange, Road 96, or Firewatch, the four-hour trip is worth taking — just know going in that the gameplay is deliberately minimal.
